Seven new faces in Australia squad

The Wallaby selectors included newcomers Luke Burgess, Dean Mumm, Lachie Turner, Ryan Cross (pictured), Richard Brown, Peter Hynes and Ben Alexander in the 30-man squad.

Centre Stirling Mortlock retained the captaincy to add some valuable experience to a squad weakened by the retirement of several key players after a poor showing at the 2007 World Cup in France.

New Zealand's Robbie Deans, who takes over as coach from John Connolly after leading the Canterbury Crusaders to the Super 14 title on Saturday, said the introduction of so many new players represented an exciting time for Australian rugby.

"There are a lot of new faces in this squad, in both the playing ranks and the coaching staff," he said in a statement.

"Our ultimate goal is the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, but that is a long way into the future.

"In the interim there is a lot of hard work to be done." Mortlock, who replaced George Gregan as skipper last season, said he was also looking forward to the challenge of moulding a new team.

"It's the start of a new era, with a new coach and many new faces within the squad," he said.

"With a few senior players from the World Cup no longer with us, there are challenges ahead but we're really looking forward to working hard with Robbie and getting results."

There were few major surprises in the 30-man list although utility back Mark Gerrard was overlooked despite making the World Cup squad last season and prop Ben Alexander was called up even though he only played six Super 14 games, all off the bench.

Scrum-half Sam Cordingley, who has served as Gregan's back-up for the past two seasons, was the oldest player at 32 while 21-year-old wing Turner was the youngest.

The Wallabies are scheduled to play 14 tests in 2008 with the first against Ireland in Melbourne on June 14.
